It wasn't just you. There were others of us who expressed dismay over the unexplored subtext, the flat book-scenes, and the absence of simple truth in the playing. See the Earlier thread about the broadcast. Benanti's beautiful and sounds beautiful, but it seemsclike she needs a director to hold her to the kind of truth that would crack her open to an audience. And the lead-guy has a helluva lot going for him. But the lesson was in Tom McGowan. His performance was authentic, which trumps beautiful singing, beautiful cheekbones, and/or veing clever every time.
I was left longing for Judy Garland's version, and not because she's such a genius but because she makes us believe in her and care about the romance. |
