| In defense of Peter Bartlett...he was surely encouraged to do that thing, that sort of campy, highly neurotic, super-cosmopolitan, which he does expertly. He was hired for it, clearly. They could've gone for some other character actor. Fred Applegate...? But you get Peter Bartlett when you hire Peter Bartlett. Maybe I'm wrong, Yeh, ideally Peter Bartlett is a very well-trained actor and he doesn't have to be the epitome of his archetype...but he was probably thoroughly encouraged to go down that road. |

| That's the only way I've seen the part played, so it is the choice of more than one director. A lot of the audience loves it. | |

| I've seen other productions, and the headwaiter is always snooty and apoplectic about anything that might destroy the ''Romantic Atmosphere.'' One of the nicest bits is that he also finds the rose that Georg dropped, but chooses not to tell Amalia about it, and keeps her hopes up. Sweet. |
