Office Hour and Oedipus El Rey

I saw this tonight. It's a surprising play and not entirely realistic, kind of a meditation on how a story with violent undertones can be told in various ways. It has an Asian young man as a dark character, with two central roles played by Asian American characters. Maybe not for everyone but one of the more original plays I've seen at the Public in a while.

Yesterday I was lucky to grab a ticket to Oedipus El Rey which is a dynamic and involving adaptation of the Greek tragedy transferred to the Chicago gang culture of LA. The stagecraft is inventive and the love story between Oedipus and Jocasta is tender and then tragic. And it's directed with a sure hand by Chay Yew, who was born in Singapore.

Should say "Chicano gang," not "Chicago gang." I hate auto correct.

To spare potential geographical confusion, I feel I should point out that your AutoCorrect changed what I'm sure was "the Chicano gang culture of LA" to "the Chicago gang culture of LA."

Here’s a review of the world premiere production of “Office Hour.”

Thanks, Bill! I guess Office House could be done in repertory with the play Gloria to make audiences really tense.
