I may have been misinformed, but I didn't think the rights were available for anyone until recently. Or those restrictions are so restricting, no one produced it. I think I noticed the first regional production last year.

Drury Lane Oakbrook recently did an outstanding production of the original '75 version of Chicago. It ran from April through June of this year. IMO it was much better than the current revival. It had an actual set -- I'm at work and don't have my Playbill with me, but there was an additional character (possibly an ex-cop or reporter) who serves as a narrator and commentator throughout the show. Some of the scenes were longer and there was at least one scene that was not in the '96 version which I've seen on tour and on Broadway.

Prior to this production the only other time that Chicago was staged by a regional theater in my area (to my knowledge) was a production by Court Theatre (sometime in the early 90's) -- I didn't see it and I've tried googling it, but I can't find anything about it.

I would have loved to have seen that production - I wonder if that was a special deal.

I was told that it took years of negotiations to secure permission to do the '75 version. In addition the family that owns and operates Drury Lane has a strong connection with a lot of Broadway producers. They have on many occasions rented the sets and costumes from recently closed Broadway shows and used them in their productions. I actually was not aware they were staging the '75 version of Chicago until late in the run. I think I did post about the production after I saw it, but it was probably too late for anyone from out of town to plan a trip to see it. I know it's been nominated for the 2017 Best Musical Jeff Award, although competition is pretty intense this year.

One of our community theaters produced it several years ago (5 possibly 6). Maybe stock rights were available a long time ago then were pulled. I know rights for professional productions were and are available as I performed in it 2002 or 2003.
