when did you see the play the last time? I thought the play was very timely (lol) and kept my interest last night. At the beginning of the play I had a hard time understanding the young female actresses.....the accent with the high pitched voices. I thought Elizabeth McGovern was surprisingly effective and the rest of the cast was first rate. I agree about the set.....a lot of money wasted with little effect. A few pieces of furniture could have changed in a minute or two to show the passage of time.

Okay, I have to start by admitting that I can cry at good scenery . . . but for me, the scene change was a highlight of the evening. I didn't expect it at all, and I thought that it was particularly effective to see the ghost of the first act visible throughout the second. All a matter of opinion, of course.

I saw it at The Shaw Festival in Ontario 15-20 yrs ago. It was a much more intimate production and as I recall the time changes were done on a single set by the use of doors through which actors exited and re-entered.
