Drury Lane Oakbrook recently did an outstanding production of the original '75 version of Chicago. It ran from April through June of this year. IMO it was much better than the current revival. It had an actual set -- I'm at work and don't have my Playbill with me, but there was an additional character (possibly an ex-cop or reporter) who serves as a narrator and commentator throughout the show. Some of the scenes were longer and there was at least one scene that was not in the '96 version which I've seen on tour and on Broadway.
Prior to this production the only other time that Chicago was staged by a regional theater in my area (to my knowledge) was a production by Court Theatre (sometime in the early 90's) -- I didn't see it and I've tried googling it, but I can't find anything about it. |
