| That's my question too. The image in my head is that of the (bad) school or community theatre director who insists on spending too much precious rehearsal time playing theatre games to "bond" the cast. I wouldn't think someone like O'Brien would feel the need to do that, especially with the experienced cast he has. So It can't be that sort of thing, can it? | |

| I don't think you are understanding the nature of workshops. They are usually done to explore one or two components of the eventual show. In one instance, I could certainly see a lab done to give choreographer Justin Peck a chance to develop his work, particularly as dance plays a huge role in CAROUSEL. Another may be that Jack O'Brian does indeed want more time to do scene work with the principal actors. Scene work is usually glossed over in putting together large scale musicals, and so if O'Brien and Scott Rudin feel it's worth the time and money to do a workshop to allow more exploratory work with the actors to bond with character and relationship, why should it be questioned? Theatre games, by the way, are only a waste of time if the director doesn't have an end result for them in mind. Rehearsals at institutions like the RSC and RNT regualarly include improvisations, and extensive table work - and I don't think many would compare their productions with bad school or community theatre. They simply have the luxury of time (often six weeks or more of rehearsal) to do more exploratory work with any production, and that is essentially what is being added to the process of a 70 year old musical here by doing a workshop. I'm frankly happy to learn they aren't treating this like a Summer Stock production that can just be thrown up quickly. |

I've had the bad luck to work with a few directors in my past who just seemed to want to do them, with no stated reason other than "it's fun" lol. I guess if the word "workshop" had been used from the start instead of "lab," maybe I would have gotten a different connotation from it. ;-) |
