Scott Rudin's Hello Dolly had two pre-reheasal labs last year. One for Warren Carlyle and the dancers to try out new choreography (much of it was scrapped in favor of the original Gower Champion dances) and one for Midler and the other principles to get a head-start on scene work with Jerry Zaks.

Rudin must have found it to be a worthwhile investment.

I guess it's the terminology that's throwing me. To me, if you're doing scenework with the director, that's rehearsal, not "pre" rehearsal, regardless of calendar schedule.

Working on one's own to prep dialogue, dialects, etc, or working on a vocal coach to learn a score outside of the formal start of rehearsals is one thing. But to me, an organized session designed to work on aspects of the production together with the production team - that's plain old rehearsal. No need to "pre" it or call it a "lab." It's rehearsal. Period. ;-)

Might as well call basic staging rehearsals "pre-tech" and the run of a show "pre-closing" lol.
