I saw GROVERS CORNERS many moons ago at the Marriott Lincolnshire in Chicago. A nice show. My understanding is that both this show by Jones & Schmidt, as well as Kander & Ebb's musical version of Wilder's SKIN OF OUR TEETH were quashed by the Thornton Wilder estate.
When developing a musical based on another work, the underlying rights holder (Thornton Wilder in both of these cases) has many rights. At virtually any point in development they can (by the terms of their agreement with the adaptors) stop the show from being produced.
They can pull their underlying rights completely, rendering the show unproduceable, though in the case of Grovers Corners and Skin of Our Teeth, they initially only disallowed a New York production, as well as any First Class production.
They may subsequently have been further restricted. |
