I made the same mistake when the story first broke about Harry Hadden-Paton's casting. I saw his photo & thought he was playing Freddy.

All the buzz had centered on Colin Firth; I never heard Hadden-Paton's name, and I don't watch ''Downton Abbey,'' so he's new to me.

It's unusual to see a ''My Fair Lady'' where the actress playing Eliza (Lauren Ambrose, 39) will be older than the Higgins (Hadden-Paton, 36).

Ambrose will be nearly twice as old as Julie Andrews was when she originated the role (at age 21), over 60 years ago in 1956.

It's also time for the Theatre Wing to look past the ''Victor/Victoria'' flap in 1996, and give Andrews her Tony for Lifetime Achievement.

Andrews has an Oscar, a SAG award, 2 Emmys, 5 Golden Globes, a Kennedy Center Honor, etc.; it's sad that the Tonys haven't honored her.

Not to begrudge her a Tony, but Julie Andrews won a Donaldson for "The Boy Friend"

which was one of the pre-eminent awards before the Tonys, so she was honored by the theater community in the past.

Miss Andrews divorced Tony Walton in the mid-sixties, but they both, praise God, had successful second marriages.I read that her life Post Poppins will be covered in the upcoming part two of her bio.HOME was a wonderful theater bio, revelatory and more honest than most.

But the Donaldson and the Theatre World are still not the same thing as a Tony, which is considered the pre-eminent Broadway honor.

Julie Andrews is one of the most beloved musical stars of all time. She’s inspired generations of people throughout the world to love musicals and to create and perform in them. It would be impossible to calculate how many people have seen a Broadway show because of her. To say that she's done little for Broadway over the last 50 years--especially since she lost her singing voice 20 years ago--is ridiculous.

Adjusted for inflation, The Sound of Music (#3) and Mary Poppins (#27) are two of the most popular films of all time. They’re the only two musicals in the top 50 that are not animated. The closest to them at #60 is My Fair Lady—which she had something to do with.

At the moment, Mary Poppins is outselling the live-action Beauty and the Beast DVD version on Amazon. TSOM is #3 in musicals. They’re both in the top 125 overall. Both movies still play on prime time TV.

Julie in Cinderella: one of the most viewed TV shows in history. To this day.

The My Fair Lady cast album is one of the most popular albums of all time, period—introducing more people to Broadway. Camelot is also one of the bestselling cast albums of all time.

Eliza Doolittle, Mary Poppins and Maria Von Trapp—there aren’t many performers who can equal that resume.

Especially since the nominating committee intentionally rigged the voting.

I just think Andrews has been too infrequent a visitor to Broadway to merit a Tony Honors or Special Award. Yes, MFL and Camelot--but then Putting It Together and Victor/Victoria the only other outings in half a century?

Look at the list of Special Tony recipients, and you'll find folks who got such honors for FAR LESS than what Julie Andrews did.

Recipients include a Martin Beck treasurer for ''unfailing courtesy,'' and the Katzenbergs for ''enthusiasm as inveterate first-nighters.''

Of course, there are those special Tonys for pop stars who did gigs on Broadway: Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, etc.

Plus, there are special Tonys for specific appearances: Mary Tyler Moore in ''Whose Life Is It, Anyway?''; Sarah Jones in ''Bridge & Tunnel,'' etc.

Andrews created TWO iconic roles on Broadway: Eliza in ''My Fair Lady'' and Guinevere in ''Camelot,'' and that's history the Wing should recognize.

Andrews is 82. Do we really need to wait until she passes, so she can be saluted belatedly with the darkening of Broadway marquees?

Maybe this ''My Fair Lady'' revival will jog some memories. But if Springsteen gets a special Tony ... and Andrews doesn't, that'll be really sad.
