Look at the list of Special Tony recipients, and you'll find folks who got such honors for FAR LESS than what Julie Andrews did.
Recipients include a Martin Beck treasurer for ''unfailing courtesy,'' and the Katzenbergs for ''enthusiasm as inveterate first-nighters.''
Of course, there are those special Tonys for pop stars who did gigs on Broadway: Bette Midler, Barry Manilow, Diana Ross, Liza Minnelli, etc.
Plus, there are special Tonys for specific appearances: Mary Tyler Moore in ''Whose Life Is It, Anyway?''; Sarah Jones in ''Bridge & Tunnel,'' etc.
Andrews created TWO iconic roles on Broadway: Eliza in ''My Fair Lady'' and Guinevere in ''Camelot,'' and that's history the Wing should recognize.
Andrews is 82. Do we really need to wait until she passes, so she can be saluted belatedly with the darkening of Broadway marquees?
Maybe this ''My Fair Lady'' revival will jog some memories. But if Springsteen gets a special Tony ... and Andrews doesn't, that'll be really sad. |
