Characters who are still alive include Gersten, Merle Debuskey, and David Amram. I heard a talkback with Nelson, who said he gave them all drafts for comment. Amram wanted him to know that he doesn't play the guitar.
I found it rather low-key as drama. It was easy to miss the concern over Papp's (and Gersten's) troubles with HUAC in the subdued conversations onstage. The personal recriminations were louder. But obviously a heartfelt tribute to that generation's dedication. |
