My husband and I saw it Thursday--there was a very good talkback after. I'd not known the play before this production--when I teach my course on AIDS in the Arts next year I will definitely include it. I really liked the script, though I might have preferred the allusions to "The Chairs" to have been left unstated (but I realize not all audience members will know the Ionesco). Some critics have likened Jody and Carl to Didi and Gogo and I recall seeing Nathan Lane and Bill Irwin play them some years ago--they made me think of Pooh and Piglet holding hands against the scary dark (I mean that in a good way). I thought Arnie Burton and Matt McGrath had some of the same qualities of innocence and experience here and I believed in them deeply as friend--in fact, their relationship reminded me of my friendship with my best pal, from all the way back in high school, who died of the never-named-virus (in the play) in 1993 and whom I think of everyday. I saw LP, Torch Song, and Bette and her superb company in "Dolly" this weekend and it is useless to compare them, as they are not only apples and oranges, but pineapples as well! But LP remains deep inside me still. I think about those two men--a lot.
