Matthew Bourne's THE RED SHOES at City Center

I went to "The Red Shoes" last night admittedly because, as a Bernard Herrmann freak, it was a chance to hear some live Herrmann. Actually it wasn't live, the music was all canned. That said, this was a wonderful experience and I highly recommend it. I'm not a dance connoisseur, but I found the choreography and sets to be very effective and beautiful. Especially moving was was last part of the actual "Red Shoes" ballet within a ballet segment, based on music from "Fahrenheit 451", and the last part of act 2, based on "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" score.

The stagecraft was brilliant, the dancers were marvelous, the use of Herrmann's music was an inspired choice, the choreography was often effective particularly in the ballet within the ballet, the costumes were a delight. If only the narrative had been clearer, it would have been a total success. The person I attended with had not seen the film and knew little about ballet, so she was puzzled over who many of the characters were and what was happening much of the time. I hope it made her want to go home and watch the film.

Sad to say, there were very few people in the audience who were not senior citizens.

Saw this ballet in Canterbury, u.k. and thought it was beautifully done last May. The audience was mainly senior citizens. I think that's the way ballet has headed. There are exceptions like The Nutcracker.

"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" is my favorite film score of all times--evocative of Debussy and the sea, but with its own signature and style. I've often thought it would make for beautiful theatrical music. Wish I could see the ballet!

Actually, Herrmann did reuse portions of Ghost in his opera Wuthering Heights.

I didn't know that! Has the opera been recorded?

Looking forward to this. Sorry to hear the Herrmann music is not live. I assume you'll be at Carnegie Hall Friday?

Unfortunately, I had picked that day to leave for vacation! If you're going I'd love to hear about it, but i guess they wouldn't allow that on this site.
