| I found this piece overwhelming; I wont describe it since I assume most folks trained in Music are familiar with it; It's a s much a theater piece/oratorio as anything. 4 rows of singers, singing the Hebrew text, one lyric soprano(Tamara Wilson) and as speaker, none other than Jeremy Irons. I don't know what the traditional kaddish, would be-Irons character is something like a modern Job, questioning God, or a Jacob, wrestling with the angel. His lines sometimes remind you of Stephen Sondheim's reference to Bernstein's 'purple prose'.The extra percussion section was fascinating to watch,3 0r 4 kinds of extra drums, hollow sticks, a xylophone and even maracas. a Wonderful afternoon, as was Yesterday's young people's concert, which I attended thinking it was just Bway excerpts, But the children seemed to enjoy it, and they all got to shout Mambo! three times during the last piece.........I'd be interested in comments from people who have seen the Kaddish 'Staged or performed. |
