Sadly, Michael Urie, whom I adore as a performer, is complete miscast. It's not his fault. The role was written for the idiosyncratic Harvey Fierstein. It only makes sense for someone with his speech rhythms and sense of timing. Most of the jokes don't land now. The over-the-top accent and mannerisms Urie takes on just aren't believable.
The rest of the cast is excellent but Urie drags the play down. What's worse is trimming an hour off kills the character development. The emotional depth of the play is lost. It seems dated and almost amateurish.
This play deserves a full revival rather than this half attempt. |
