Earle Hyman, an acclaimed and classically trained actor of Broadway and Off-Broadway, died Friday at age 91. He earned a Tony nomination for Edward Albee's "The Lady From Dubuque'' (1980), even though it ran for only 12 performances. And he got an Emmy nomination as Russell Huxtable, Cosby's TV dad, in ''The Cosby Show'' (1986), even though he was only 11 years older than Cosby in real life.

But I'll remember seeing Hyman as James Tyrone in an all-black TV production of Eugene O'Neill's ''Long Day's Journey Into Night.''

He starred opposite the remarkable Ruby Dee as Mary Tyrone, and received a 1983 CableACE Award for his fine performance.
