He received the Lifetime Achievement Obie Award in 2009, and gave a beautiful, memorable speech that included his memory of seeing Nazimova play GHOSTS on the "subway circuit" when he was 12.

The NYT obit, linked below, omits mention of the Obie, but puts the rest of his career in excellent perspective, emphasizing his artistic achievements in Scandinavia over his TV fame as Grandpa Huxtable. In the Obie citation - read by Anne Hathaway who presented him with the award - we wrote, "He has played Othello in Swedish more times than most of us have seen it in English." So amazing to think he could play that role in four languages - English, Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian.

btw, he was also one of the very first Obie guest judges - in 1956.
