Rob, did we see the same show? Maybe it's a British thing, because this show was a success there. In Toronto it opened to very mixed reviews, and those were kind.

I was really looking forward to it and finally caught up with it last week. I couldn't have been more disappointed. Barely made it through the whole show, it was so annoying for a variety of reasons.
The one thing I can agree on is that the cast all have great voices - but that's where the positives end.

First off, there is zero chemistry between the two leads, Andrew Polec and Christina Bennington. She comes across pretty cold and unlikeable. While its the 80's and I get his bleached blond frizzy rock star look, he isn''t sexy, he's very pale and when he's running around with his shirt off rubbing blood on his chest, he comes across more like a heroin addict.

The big villain of the night, Falco, is played by Rob Fowler. He's also the father of the female lead, who will do anything to keep the 2 lovebirds apart. He sings about how old he is, how he remembers the old days and everyone on stage fears him for being so evil - ironically, not only does he not look old, but he's the sexiest one on stage. they even have him dancing in a thong at one point.

One of the songs I looked forward to the most, "Two out of Three Ain't Bad", happens early in the show. The voices are amazing, but strangely, it's sung by two characters we know absolutely nothing about. These 2 just appear out of nowhere, so we don't care at all. Might as well be watching "American Idol."
Sadly, the book for this show makes "We Will Rock You" look like a masterpiece! I can see this touring but would be very surprised if it made it to Broadway.

Those are just a few of the bizzare choices the creative team made.
I was with 2 people who know the Meatloaf album by heart, and both wanted to leave at intermission. I guess if you like video, smoke, ugly costumes that make no sense and very loud music, you might like this. I have no idea where the great reviews in Manchester came from.
