I disagree with your premise--and certainly don't believe it's obvious, as you say.
I think musicals are called "new" to distinguish them from revivals. (Technically "The Phantom of the Opera" is still a new musical.) I think "The Band's Visit" is claiming the title of best new musical on Broadway (including "Dear Evan Hansen"), not the best one so far this season. They put it in quotes in the subject line of the press release, but it's not clear what that's referring to exactly.
You can definitely disagree whether it is, in fact, the best new musical, but I don't think they meant to say it's the best one to have opened since the Tonys. |
