ELMORE JAMES FINDS THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS IN NEW “CAROL” STAGED IN CHELSEA TOWNHOUSE BEGINNING NOVEMBER 30

The distinguished opera singer and actor Elmore James stars in a special one-man version of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” which Origin Theatre Company stages in a Chelsea townhouse beginning Thursday November 30. Directed by Erwin Maas this uniquely immersive holiday experience boldly juxtaposes the happiness and hardship of the season as it drives home the universality of the holidays for both the wealthy and the less fortunate.

Running a total of 14 performances from Thursday November 30 to Friday December 15, “A Christmas Carol” unfolds at Torn Page, 435 West 22nd Street, the Chelsea home of the actors Rip Torn and the late Geraldine Page. The opening is set for Sunday December 3 at 8pm.

Adapting Dickens’ little-used original performance text, Origin’s enchanting new site-specific parlor performance recreates what crowds both large and small might have experienced when Dickens himself performed his story. Beginning in 1853 (his novel was first published in 1843), Dickens offered both command performances in large theatres across England (and in a famous tour of the United States in 1867-68), and for friends and family in his country home, Gad’s Hill Place, where he had a miniature stage installed. Mince pie and mulled wine, prepared on the premises, will be served during the performance and are included in the single ticket price of $65.

A versatile performer, James made his opera debut in the celebrated Peter Sellars’s “Don Giovanni,” and was featured in the Metropolitan Opera’s “Porgy and Bess.” He is a veteran of five Broadway productions. Maas, Origin’s director of programming, directed last season’s critically acclaimed “Poison” -- a NY Times Critic’s Pick -- and the North American premiere of “The Hundred We Are,” in the spring of 2016. Both were Origin mainstage productions.

Under the artistic direction of George C. Heslin Origin Theatre Company, which specializes in staging the American premieres of impactful contemporary plays from Europe, is now in its 15th season.

Audience movement is limited, though the climbing of stairs is necessary. Origin’s site-specific “A Christmas Carol” starring Elmore James performs Tuesday to Sunday from Thur Nov 30 through Fri Dec 15. All shows at 8pm. For tickets, which are $65, call 866-811-4111 or visit www.origintheatre.org . Torn Page, 435 West 22nd, is between 9th & 10th Avenues.
