It's not only inept, it's boring. It's not like going to a high-camp disaster like Dance of the Vampires. It's like going to some PTA variety show but without the fun of knowing the people personally.
And the audience: I've never seen such a low group of people in a Broadway theatre. They must have passed out comp tickets via community centers to people rummaging through the clothing donations bin or to people temporarily furloughed from institutions that do not have laundry or personal bathing facilities available. Still, even these people were not too thrilled with the proceedings. There was one woman, however, who arrived with a screaming baby and, finally, after about a half hour of the high-pitched screeching (not to be confused with the screeching coming from the "singers" on stage), the mother removed the baby from the audience, crawling over everyone in the row. Amazingly, after calming down the baby (somewhat) the two RETURNED to their seats to provide further, but frankly welcome, distraction from the performance. That baby might have been John Simon in disguise providing a correct real-time appraisal of this horror. |
