| They know they are part of the show, the way they are introduced into Loveland and garlanded makes clear that they are conscious of their role and that this is to be the means with which to express their feelings at this point. I never understood why Ben was the only one to be conscious that he is part performing/part disintegrating but Cooke now makes better sense of the whole episode by having them all exhibit their breakdowns. So, for me, Sally is backstage because that mirrors her state of mind within the show, whilst Buddy plays the comedian, Phyllis vies with her past self and Ben tries to keep up the facade in a show number. I thought that this was a far more organically thought through production than any version since Prince/Bennett (only seen most on video, as a caveat) because the director goes back to first principles - mine the text. That he has gone in different directions to Prince/Bennett is a welcome relief and frees the play from those who think there is 'the way to do it'. On other issues, I know that this is a small subsection here but the response in the UK has been outstanding and these are critics who are more used to seeing plays (often with an antipathy to musicals) and the directing is of that ilk. As to why some take against Staunton, that really is an unfathomable, it may not be an interpretation that people imagine is 'the way to do it' but it's done to that integrates into this production and (finally, with the harsher ending), makes clear that she has been sinking throughout the show whilst the others are caught up in their own problems. The others get their numbers, Sally is so out of it that she doesn't even get out of the dressing room. |
