Madeleine Goldsmith presents the world premiere of You Can’t Kiss a Movie, written by Shelley Farmer and Alex Hare and directed by Hare. Running December 15-17, You Can’t Kiss a Movie is a dynamic multimedia play centered on women in cinema, using live-feed filming to capture the creation of an original film in the style of the French New Wave. Performed by Farmer, Greg Balla*, Erin Healani Chung, and Adam Weppler*, You Can’t Kiss a Movie is a part of SubletSeries@HERE: Co-op, HERE's curated rental program, which provides artists with subsidized space and equipment, as well as technical support.

*these actors are appearing courtesy of Actors’ Equity Association.

You Can’t Kiss a Movie gazes back at the male gaze with curiosity, disgust, desire, and a hunger for alternative ways of looking. The show depicts a cameraman, a PA, and a pair of actors creating an original French New Wave film that is simultaneously projected live, allowing the audience to witness both the completed film and the behind-the-scenes process. As the show progresses, audience volunteers get a chance to go behind the camera and take control of what appears on screen. Ultimately, the leading lady must investigate what power she has, if any, over her own image.

Drawing on the freewheeling spirit of Jean-Luc Godard and the sensitivity of Agnès Varda, You Can’t Kiss a Movie creates a space for audiences to consider how movies have shaped the way we engage with each other outside the auditorium – and how we can recover.

Produced by Madeleine Goldsmith. The creative team for You Can’t Kiss a Movie includes An-Lin Dauber (set/costume designer), Jennifer Fok (lighting designer), Michael Gildin (composer/arranger), Abraham Marlett (stage manager), and John Zhao (film consultant).

Performances of You Can’t Kiss a Movie will take place December 15-17 (see schedule above) at HERE (145 6th Ave, Manhattan – entrance on Dominick St). Critics are welcome as of December 15, which serves as the official opening. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased at http://here.org/shows/detail/1964/ or by calling (212) 352-3101.

About the Artists

Shelley Farmer is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer based, like all multi-disciplinary artists and writers, in Brooklyn. She has performed at Jack, Dixon Place, HERE, and some disheartening regional theaters, and her writing has appeared in Paper Magazine, Indiewire, The Museum of the Moving Image's Reverse Shot, FilmLinc Daily, and Film.com. She is also the repertory publicist at Film Forum in the Village. She has a cheerily tormented relationship with male directors and auteur theory, and has had many heated discussions about Godard. (None have ended in violence. Yet.)

Alex Hare is a director/writer interested in community-building theatre. Co-founder of Corkscrew Theater Festival, which premiered this past summer, Alex has recently directed Walt Whitman BodyJolt (New Masculinities Festival), Autoportrait (Dixon Place HOT! Festival, by Zachary Small), and Chains Don’t Rattle Themselves (with The Songwriter’s Orchestra). Assistant Credits: Side Show (St. James Theatre, Kennedy Center), School of Rock (Winter Garden Theatre). Alex studied English Literature and American Studies at Columbia University. SDC Associate.
