| But why is Ben privileged with that, when the other three are just as screwed up? If I was being political about it, why does that chance fall to the rich guy? I'm sure one could also make a case AGAINST any of the others, had Ben not been the one. ;-) I do NOT tend to think that any of the writers decided that the "rich guy" gets the last song and the breakdown. I think it's way too easy to overanalyze this. I don't think this is a case of "privilege." To echo Michael's answer in a slightly different way - I think to have written each of the 4 follies numbers as literal breakdowns would have been tedious and anticlimactic. It makes perfect (and better) dramatic sense to me that instead, the 4 songs have one arc that leads to one big breakdown. Why Ben was put last may have been as simple as the fact that his number was the easiest to make fall apart in the context of the way the show was being mapped out. I don't know. (I don't recall if Chapin's book has any insight on this.) |
