The recent Broadway revival was directed by Eric Shaeffer, it was a transfer of his DC production. And by all accounts it was even better than the DC production it was based on (I saw it on Broadway with Bernadette and in LA with Victoria)... so I'm not sure why/how the same production was absolutely brilliant in DC and not very good in NYC.
For what it's worth, I thought it was generally excellent with some brilliance, but still disappointing in some ways. But I know too much about the original production and know the show so well, and am a director myself, so it takes a lot for me with this show because I love it so much. I'm quite terrified to bring friends to see the NT Live broadcast, actually. If my harrowing experience bringing people to the Merrily London cinema broadcast is any indication, I will regret ever mentioning it to people who are Follies newbies. |
