| I've always considered "The Road You Didn't Take" a counterpart of "In Buddy's Eyes" - they're almost public relations statements that, upon closer inspection, aren't exactly truthful. On the surface, the lyrics in both songs seem to be saying one thing, but the actor's delivery (and dissonant elements in the orchestration) suggest something else. I find Sally's "Life is slow but it seems exciting 'cause Buddy's there" to be as convincing as Ben's "One has regrets which one forgets" - in other words, not at all. Of course, I was fortunate enough to see John McMartin and Dorothy Collins playing these parts, and they both brought out the subtext beautifully. |
