| Interesting decision to begin rather more in medias res. The front of the play has been shaved, plot points combined, and Marie's duplicity with Turk is already in place. I saw this at the time, but didn't recall how they cut the work. Woodward feels in and out, at times inching more toward Amanda Wingfield than Lola. Yet she shows us more of the young Lola than Booth, the girl who attracted Doc. The flat Inge midwestern-speak isn't as natural for her or Olivier. Watching, I keep wanting to fall in love with her performance but feel her working. Fisher does well with Maria, and avoids the coquettish take that Terry Moore used in the film. |
