| I think Barbara Cook said that when she sang "In Buddy's Eyes", Sally was saying an elaborate lie. I think she's correct; this is a big PR spin that she's, well, spinning out to Ben. Certainly Ben is also trying to rationalize his life's journey and choices in his song, though he's not invested emotionally in Sally anywhere near as she is in him. His comes off as more intellectual and philosophical, which is why in my experience the song rarely gets a big audience response at its conclusion even when done well. Maybe that is a possible reason for his "Live Laugh Love" being placed as the last "Folly" and the most flagrant breakdown at the end of the show -- his intellect and suavity are all a show, he no longer can cover up the hurt, and he can't fake it or take it anymore by the end. | |
