It's a strange movie, but I have a real soft spot for it. I do think it suffered commercially for picking a fairly idiosyncratic story to tell - and one that never features the actual concert. I don't feel like Staunton's character is well written, but she certainly commits to what she is asked to do, and I think she manages to make a cartoonish figure quite grounded and touching. That finale scene (the morning after the pot brownies) is a very tricky one to pull off well, and for me she nails it.
I love the cast, which includes a lot of theatre people, and also presents one of the more bizarre renditions of Chekhov to ever make it to the silver screen. |
