Ben Brantley on FOLLIES as seen live on stage at the National Theatre.

I have been noticing a difference of opinion on ATC re the NT's FOLLIES. And it strikes me that the enthusiastic response is coming from those of us who have the musical live versus those who've seen the video. (I have not seen the NTLive version and probably will not in the future, not wishing to possibly compromise a memorable evening.)

In any case, Ben Brantley saw the production recently in London. I am sharing a link to his comments. With the holiday, this article may have been missed by some.

Ben Brantley in The New York Times:

"Its characters have never seemed quite as close to the grave, or as fearful of their own mortality, as they do in this uncompromising production. . . . It is both the most merciless and most compassionate production of this show that I’ve ever encountered."
