I saw the HD version of “Follies” on Wednesday and thoroughly enjoyed it. The camera angles provided excellent views of the stage and while panorama shots would have shrunk the image too much, the camera was able to show portions of what was going on at the back of the stage, not just in front. The performances were as uniformly good as I’ve ever seen, and Ms. Staunton’s “Losing My Mind” was a highlight, particularly because she finished the number by doing a transformation through a complex set of feelings. I saw her do a similar thing in “Gypsy,” live in London, and it’s stunning to watch.
Wish I could have been there. I’m sure that the in-person experience was even more memorable. But, I’ll definitely take what I saw on the screen.
