This is a wonderful discussion about a song that has been misappropriated (at least in minds) by many. The real time/real world use of the hashtag thing is just 180 from the ultimate dramatic purpose in the show. Thus the song is one of the more daring pieces of the musiccal, because it's the moment wherein Evan crosses a line in public. But all of these reports about people weeping and sobbing over the earnest messaging -- well, what about that? Does the show turn some members of the audience into the Hansen-duped? I much appreciated the fact that the creators here explore that, and ultimately--
SPOILER
The show is honest in its catharsis and resolution, and makes Evan pay for every mistake and lie. His only win is self-knowledge. He pays dearly. As he must. I saw the show late December, but remember holding my breath, afraid that a feel good ending might be tacked on. Yeah, with a reprise of "You Will Be Found." The show is better than that. |
