"It is a version of The Little Mermaid in which the melancholy ending is treated as a happy one. I think it is the happy tone of Island's ending that makes it hard for me to love. If turning into a tree were more akin to the Mermaid's death, I might enjoy this musical more."
I can understand you point of view, but I don't think of it that way at all. To me, the death of Ti-Moune in ONCE ON THIS ISLAND is so deeply sad that it always brings me to tears. The point of the epilogue is that there will be a future when it is possible for people from different classes or castes or racial makeups to marry, but I don't think that fact or even the idea that Ti-Moune becomes a tree makes the circumstances of her death any less devastatingly sad. |
