I'm surprised to hear this about the black box production, considering the show was designed to be performed in a legit theater rather than a less traditional black box space (though I can easily see it working in any space because the show doesn't *have* to utilize the theater it's being performed in as if it were also the Weissman theater) and so few ever attempt it in that kind of space, but moreso because I've always found Eric Schaeffer to be a major let down as a director. But I'm sure DC locals have a much more extensive exposure to the ups and downs of his abilities.
I long to see a production of Follies that I can describe as brilliant without any conditions or handicaps. His 2011 revival was very solid and represented the show much better than the Roundabout revival, but was not brilliant without condition. |
