| Thanks for the explanation. In the original production, Ti-Moune's death was heartbreakingly sad, and I think a lot of that comes across on the original cast recording. Even if you disagree with the choice, I think it's understandable why the show ends on a note of hope. Rare is the musical that ends on a note of devastating sadness, although it's interesting that two of the greatest ones do: WEST SIDE STORY and SWEENEY TODD. And to name one of my other favorite shows of all time, I think part of the brilliance of the ending of THE KING AND I is that's it's simultaneously hopeful and tremendously sad. |
