Caught the revival. Michael Arden continues to prove himself a force to be reckoned with as a director of musicals. Fantastic staging and some truly stunning stage images (The hurricane scene at the start was my favorite.). The orchestrations do have a more modern sound, which was fine. There were no Rosie’s kids after my performance and that is just as well since I am confident it woild have distracted from the much more important final imagine on “the tree.”
Where this revival seems to go astray for me is in the approach of Ti Moune. Here, she came off like a stalker girlfriend, rather than someone trying to understand the cruelty of the world. I remember so well the heartbreaking scene outside the gates of the original production. This just felt like Camille on her death bed.
The gender blind casting is a stroke of genius. It works much better with Asaka and Alex’s amazing vocals (though he has some issues with pronouncing full words). Papa Ge doesn’t have the vocal chops to carry the range, but I appreciated her fierce performance.
It should be noted people were walking out during the show. Watches were being looked at. It’s not for everyone. It’s a very good evening despite its flaws. |
