Hello Dolly Wednesday matinee

I will start by saying I entered the Schubert being only familiar with the movie which I saw repeatedly as a child. I LOVE LOVED this show and production. The book is far superior to the film's script, the staging was so clever, the choreography elicits a huge smile and the score is perfection. Jerry Herman efficiently propels the story forward with clarity and wonderful unforgettable tunes. I never understood what I was seeing when I was 5 on the big screen but now I realize the story is about letting go of the past and allowing love, or not, into your life again and finally, acceptance for what life, our lives are.

The cast from top to bottom were first rate. Bette is an old school Broadway star bringing this classic role to life with her organic sense of comedy that only amplified the sentimentality. Her energy is herculean. Hyde Pearce was excellent as well. Penny in my Pocket wasn't a good representation of the show on the Tony's but works beautifully in the show, why was it cut? Anyhow, the two of them had a sweet chemistry. The costumes, sets and the chorus were all handing the audiences such gifts of love and joy.

Not in recent memory have I attended a Broadway show where the audience was enraptured with what they were witnessing, you could hear a pin drop during the book scenes/songs, huge guffaws for the jokes and thunderous cheers during entrances and at the end of songs. The energy of love for this show was crackling and palpable. See this show if you want to be transcended, lets face it, we could all use some of that!

Hello Dolly is the epitome of what a Broadway should do: give you goose bumps, at times cry, laugh out loud and finally send you on the street singing and dancing, BRAVO!
