You are way more generous than I am. I thought it was such a mixed bag. I felt like it didn’t know what it wanted to be: was it an inventive piece of stagecraft? Or a big, splashy musical? There is so much money on that stage and not always used to the greatest effect. For me, the having the songs written by so many different artists leads to a lack of cohesion. And the first and second acts have such different feels: the second act has many more direct quotes and references to the series, leading to bursts of applause from the audience (which leads me to think more of these will be added during the preview process.)
All that being said, I thought the performers were outstanding. I’m glad I got discounted tickets. I took 4 older teens, who are huge Spongebob fans and they were also frustrated by the uneven tone of the night. They all liked it more than I did, but should’ve loved it, being the target audience.
