ANNIE at the Paper Mill yesterday

We really enjoyed this straightforward production of ANNIE, in which the director simply trusts the material and lets it shine. The Annie we saw, Peyton Ella, has a big belting voice that had people around me catching their breath as soon as she started singing. Beth Leavel is frumpy and funny. But the real standout is Christopher Sieber, who invests Daddy Warbucks with a lot of heart.

It was relief to see such a solid production, after the disappointment of the last Broadway revival, with its irritating accents and misguided character choices. This production has nothing new or groundbreaking to get people to Millburn, just top-of-the-line singing and acting. For me, that is plenty.
