| By the time Beau Willimon's The Parisian Woman started to cook -- about an hour into its ninety-minute running time -- I had all but lost interest. This was partly due to the flimsiness of the script, a parade of political clichés and predictable intrigue, and partly due to Uma Thurman's largely anemic performance. Thurman looks smashing in Jane Greenwood's elegant costumes, but she never manages to project the aura of authority and irresistibility that the character needs. I never believed that every man (and woman) who comes into her orbit would fall in love with her, or that she was capable of the subterfuge she engineers. The production includes a terrific set by Derek McLane and a couple game supporting performances -- particularly Blair Brown, although it's the kind of role she could play in her sleep -- but not enough for me to recommend anyone take a trip to the Hudson. |
