In the original book, it is more or less stated baldly that Sally has already made one suicide attempt ("I should have died the first time", she says in the final scene). That's gone from the revised versions, although it's back in the current National Theatre revival.
Even so, as you say, weeping through 'Losing My Mind', or in any way acting the song as a breakdown, is a damaging choice. The Loveland songs are not conventional book numbers, and - up until Ben's collapse - they work best (as I think we already discussed) when they're *performed* rather than acted. |
