We agree on the Loveland songs. I think to miss the "Follies" performance concept of that entire section is to completely misunderstand what is happening and what the metaphor is. It's bizarre to me when a good director doesn't seem to understand this.
But as for Sally's suicide attempt, yes, I know that dialogue and I still don't think that means she arrived at the reunion a few steps from suicide. Many people attempt suicide, that doesn't mean that they spend every day on the proverbial edge of a building every day going forward. Which isn't to say that she there isn't a dangerous amount of weight and emotion hinging on this evening, but I don't think that's the same as being steps away from suicide. I think we need to believe she was hopeless and trapped in the choices she made, and that she is capable of taking it there, and that she is haunted by this sadness. But again, steps away from suicide sounds like the direction Peters was working with to get her to some of the choices she made in the revival and I don't think it works. |
