Trying to understand the cruelty of the world? I think that’s exactly the opposite of what she is doing. She does not accept the cruelty of the world - and in the end that’s her undoing. But, in persisting, she provides a tale for future generations to tell and helps break down the barriers that stood in her way (the finale talks of Daniel’s son choosing to be with a peasant girl)
The message of this production seems so relevant to today that it really worries me to hear that people aren’t getting it - that she isn’t supposed to love Daniel because she gives him nothing in return. The whole point of the show is about the power of unconditional love (from ti moune’s parents at the beginning of the show, to ti moune’s caring for Daniel). It seems as though a lot of folks on this board would rather see Daniel as an other unworthy of Ti Moune’s love - it says a lot about what’s wrong with our country today.
