I'd read about Angela Lansbury's inflight encounter with a Hello, Dolly! executive in which she pointed out that "Love Is Only Love" had originally been written for Mame, but in the version I'd read, she gave the news to the film's producer/screenwriter Ernest Lehman, not to associate producer Roger Edens. But since this was the type of news they would have immediately shared with each other, it really doesn't matter. But, yes - the two producers weren't pleased about commissioning Jerry Herman to write two NEW songs for the film, and having him turn in one that was freshly written and another that was a cast-off from a Broadway show.

Jerry Herman's memories about the film are problematic, and one of his anecdotes is a real head-scratcher. At the bottom of the linked page, he talks about Gene Kelly not placing "Just Leave Everything To Me" where he intended it - and as a result, it was followed by a "solid half hour of talk." But the new song follows "Call on Dolly" (just as "I Put My Hand In" did on stage, albeit without the quick Ambrose Kemper scene). Once it's finished, it's followed by the overture and main titles; within 10 minutes, "It Takes a Woman" is sung by Vandergelder and company, and about five minutes after that, Dolly reprises the song herself. And within another ten minutes (of quick scenes with Dolly, Ambrose, Ermengarde, Cornelius and Barnaby), everyone is singing and dancing "Put On Your Sunday Clothes."

In other words, I don't know which film has a "solid half hour of talk" after "Just Leave Everything To Me," but it's not Hello, Dolly!
