It actually is an adaptation of a play by Henry Becque "La Parisienne" which dates from 1885. So the "well-made play" boulevard diva vehicle mechanics would come from the source material.
It is the usual French soufflé about a glamorous married woman juggling a husband, a best friend who is her longtime lover and a young man with whom she is cheating on both her husband and longtime lover/friend.
Checking on IBDB it seems that Becque's play came to Broadway twice: First time in 1904 with Gabrielle Réjane in repertory and then in 1950 there was a short-lived English version production with Faye Emerson, Helmut Dantine, Francis Lederer and Romney Brent directed by Sam Wanamaker.
