| Knew L. Bernstein well after Candide. His version was that Latouche had done some early work but had left before rehearsals, never got a straight answer as to why. Wilbur was at Harvard and easily accessible for Boston tryouts and after that, wrote what was needed and sent it by messenger (no e mail back then). As LB never spoke ill of Latouche, only lovingly I don't think it was because of friction unless it was with Hellman, but then everyone was in disagreement with her. In spite of her prickly personality I still think her book is a far better match to the sensibility of the score than Hugh Wheeler's. Possibly Latouche disappeared on a drinking binge. |
