And when you hire Peter Bartlett, you know you are going to get him doing his Peter Bartlett thing--so that is what they must have wanted. I don't remember Jonathan Freeman bringing any more subtlety or nuance (it's really an extended bit) and he got a Tony nomination for it! For what it's worth, I thought Bartlett showed some genuine compassion for Amalia at the end of the scene.
