| According to Kenward Elmslie, Latouche quit "Candide' partly for the reason stated in the New York Times, that he needed to finish work on the Carol Channing vehicle "The Vamp," which had Broadway dates lined up, and because of friction with Hellman, who was considerably homophobic toward him. Ultimately, though, Elmslie said that Latouche was fed up with "Candide." He did leave with an agreement stating that he would have to be the person to do rewrites on any of the work he had already done, and indeed he was planning to do such rewrites at his home in Vermont, where he died suddenly and unexpectedly of a heart attack. It certainly wasn't due to "a drinking binge," which strikes me as a rather nasty and idly speculative comment. |
