| 1. Which cast album probably came in 4th in the voting and just missed the cut? The stellar ''Sunday in the Park With George''? Sorry to see that Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford didn't get the recognition they deserve. Or could No. 4 have been ''The Great Comet'' with Josh Groban? 2. So how many cast albums were eligible? One poster on the BroadwayWorld message board could tick off more than 30 (which included ''Anastasia,'' ''Bandstand,'' ''Groundhog Day,'' etc.). How many did the Grammys need to field 5 nominees? In recent history, only 2012 and 2014 had yielded just 3 nominees. It sucks that Musical Theater gets only 3 nominees, and in a list of 84 categories, it's the ONLY one with only 3 nominees. 3. Who determines the Grammy-eligible ''principal soloists'' for each album? The producer? For instance, only Bette Midler is eligible from the cast of ''Hello, Dolly!,'' as is Ben Platt from ''Dear Evan Hansen.'' Yet a couple of years ago, ''Hamilton'' was nominated here with 10 ''principal soloists'': Daveed Diggs, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Jonathan Groff, Christopher Jackson, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom, Jr., Onadowan Okieriete, Anthony Ramos and Phillipa Soo. (By the way, was ''Hamilton Mixtape'' eligible for Musical Theater? Surprised it's a no-show.) |
